The Insider: Dawson leads 3M, Langer continues hot streak

While Marco Dawson’s 9-under par 63 leads the 3M Championship after the opening round Friday, the talk around TPC Twin Cities revolves around Bernhard Langer and the absurdly stellar golf he’s been playing this season.

The German carded an 8-under par 64 Friday to sit tied for second place alongside Rocco Mediate, Jeff Maggert and Vijay Singh.

Langer won the 2014 Senior Open Sunday at Royal Porthcawl Golf Club in Wales by a record 13 strokes, breaking Hale Irwin’s record that stood for 17 years.

With 13 Top-10 finishes and four victories already this year, Langer has finished no worse than 20th in 14 events while amassing more than $2 million in earnings.

“I drove it well and hit my irons well today,” Lander said after his round of 64 Friday. “I missed a couple of putts I’d like to have made, but overall I’m very pleased.”

“The conditions were great today. It’s amazing how low guys score out here. There were some low scores out there, especially with no wind. I love this golf course—I like fast greens and I’ve had some success here,” Langer said.

Mediate, a recent Minnesotan, started his round with a birdie on the third hole to quickly dip into red numbers before back-to-back birdies at the sixth and seventh holes put him at 3-under for the round.

Mediate had a good up and down on the ninth hole for par and rolled in another par on the 10th.

“That was a great save at 9 for par and I made a nice putt for par at 10,” Mediate said.

Falk comes over

to Wild side

The Minnesota Wild signed defenseman Justin Falk to a one-year, two-way contact on Friday.

No financial terms of the deal were released by the team.

The 25-year-old Falk had 15 points and 100 penalty minutes in 108 regular-season games for the Wild from 2009 to 2013. Last season, he played for the New York Rangers and had two assists and 20 penalty minutes in 21 games.

Falk was drafted in the fourth round (110th overall) by the Wild in 2007.
