Willmar Fests tennis champs crowned

WILLMAR - Josh Proehl defeated Ryan Ackerman in three sets to win the Willmar Fests Men's Open Singles championship over the weekend at the Willmar High School courts.

Michael Gutman won the Men's A Singles, Chad Schmiesing and Brent Gloege won the Men's Doubles and Corey Spencer and Brett Rodenberg won the Men's A Doubles.

Maddy Spencer won the Women's Open Singles title, Haley Knorr won the Women's A Singles, Cayle Hovland and Marissa Toivonen won the Women's Open Doubles and Manny Obregon and Elise Bierbaum won the A Mixed Doubles.

In the Men's Open Singles, Brett Rodenberg defeated Taylor Rudnick in the opening round, and Proehl then defeated Rodenberg to reach the finals. Ackerman defeated Raphael Zelaya in the semis but fell to Proehl in the title match 6-0, 4-6, 10-8.

In the Men's A singles, Gutman advanced with a win over Alex Hovland, then defeated Austin Bengston to reach the final. Anthony Ross and Adam Dawson won opening-round matches, and Ross downed Dawson to reach the final. Gutman downed Ross 8-6 in the championship match.

Schmiesing and Gloege reached the Men's Doubles finals with victories over Grant Duininck and Ackerman and Adam Rice and Kyle Rice. Schmiesing and Gloege defeated Brady Radamacher and Neil Radamacher 6-1, 6-2 in the title match.

In the Men's A Doubles, Spencer and Brett Rodenberg reached the final with a win over Dawson and Josh Johannes while Aaron Rodenberg and Ross downed Caleb Lawrence and Nathan Lawrence for a spot in the championship match. Spencer and Brett Rodenberg won the title 6-1, 2-6, 10-7.

In the Women's Open Singles, Maddy Spencer defeated Alyssa Morrell 9-7 in the title match.

In the Women's A singles, Haley Knorr and Isabelle Schmiesing won semifinals matches and Knorr won the championship 8-0.

In the Women's Open Doubles, Hovland and Toivonen defeated Amy Morrell and Lydia Morrell in the semifinals and Elise Bierbaum and Shanna Kinny reached the final with a win over Olivia Corneil and Makenna Hogan. Hovland and Toivonen won the championship 6-4, 1-6, 10-7.

In the A Mixed Doubles, Obregon and Bierbaum defeated Olivia Corneil and Drew Corneil 6-3, 6-4 in the title match.
