Midwest Cup: Team Minnesota leads after Day 1


WILLMAR - Justin Burleson shot a 6-under 66 for a one-shot lead and two of his Team Minnesota teammates edged into the top five during the first round of the Midwest Cup on Friday at Eagle Creek Golf Club.

After Day One, Team Minnesota leads the 54-hole, eight-team tournament with 117 points. Missouri is second with 107 and Kansas is third with 85.

Twenty five of the 79 competitors shot par or better on the first of three 18-hole rounds.

The Midwest Cup is an annual Mid-Amateur tournament featuring 10-player teams from Minnesota, Missouri, Kansas, Wisconsin, South Dakota, Illinois, Nebraska and Iowa.

Day Two is today at Eagle Creek and the tournament wraps up Sunday.

Burleson leads Missouri's Brian Haskell (67) by one stroke. Danny Anderson, of Eagle Creek, shot a 4-under 68 and is tied for third with Nebraska's Lance Lawson, and Team Minnesota's Joe Conzemius shot 69 and is among four golfers tied for fifth.

Conzemius' round ties him for first place with Missouri's Wayne Fredrick and Illinois' John Wright in the Senior Midwest Cup division.

Andy Jacobson, of Eagle Creek, and his Team Minnesota teammate John Anderson both shot 71 and are among eight golfers tied for 13th.

Team Minnesota's Mike Fiedler, the 2016 Cup champion, and teammate Will Hickey both shot 72 and are among five golfers tied for 21st.

Team Minnesota's Matt Goran, of Eagle Creek, shot 73 and is tied with seven golfers in 26th place. Other Team Minnesota players include Jim Lehman, who shot 76 and is tied for 46th, and Jordan Hawkinson, who shot 78 and is tied for 57th.

Hickey is tied for sixth and Lehman is tied for 11th in the Senior Division.
