Sacred Heart, Raymond advance to state amateur tournament

MADISON -- After losing to Raymond three times earlier in the season, Sacred Heart upended the Rockets 8-4 Sunday in the championship of the Region 9C playoffs.

Both teams advance to the state tournament with Sacred Heart (26-13) playing St. Martin at 7:30 p.m. and Raymond (31-6) playing Lake Henry at 5 p.m. next Saturday in Bird Island in the first round.

Sacred Heart responded after Jordan Smith hit a solo home run in the first inning for Raymond by getting a solo shot from Ryan Hebrink and a three-run homer from Mike Johnson in the second to take an early 4-1 lead.

The Rockets got within one in the bottom half of the second when Matt Bauer hit another solo homer and Zach Nelson singled in a run. Kyle Knott's solo homer in the third then tied the game.

The Saints answered with three runs in the fourth to take control for good. Ross Hebrink scored on a wild pitch to break the tie and Mike Kuschel added a two-run single.

Adam Loe survived surrendering nine hits and three walks over 6Xc innings of work to get the win. Loe also struck out seven. Tom DeBoer also struck out seven, but the Raymond starter was tagged with the loss after giving up six hits and seven earned runs in five innings.

A two-run homer from Jeff Hinderks and solo homers from Ryan Hebrink and Jeremy Hinderks allowed Sacred Heart to clinch a spot in the state tournament from the third straight year. The Saints pounded out 13 hits.

Jeremy Hinderks hurled a complete game to get the win, striking out 10 and giving up five hits.

Nate Hebrink's one-hit shutout that featured eight strikeouts kept Sacred Heart alive and eliminated Madison from the tournament. Hebrink allowed just two baserunners by issuing a walk in the first inning and giving up a single to Aaron Olson in the third.

Justin Schlemmer sparked the Saints' offense by hitting three RBI singles. Ryan Hebrink belted a two-run homer in the third and Nate Hebrink helped his own cause by hitting a two-run triple in the first.

Schlemmer, Tyler Kleinhuizen, Mike Kuschel and Jeff Hinderks all had three hits for the Saints.

Mike Jeseritz led off the home half of the first inning with a home run to ignite a 15-hit attack for Raymond. Jason Meyer and Ben Ruter hit back-to-back RBI singles and Matt Bauer had an RBI double also in the inning.

That was more than enough support for Raymond starter Tyler Knott as Knott worked the first five innings of the seven-inning contest to get the win. Knott struck out six without issuing a walk and gave up just three hits. Zach Nelson and Jordan Smith each threw a scoreless inning of relief to finish the game.

Jeseritz, Bauer and Ruter had three hits each while Jed Nelson and Jason Meyer added two apiece. Meyer also hit a solo home run in the fourth.

Norway Lake-Sunburg outhit Elrosa 7-5, but the Lakers were unable to string any big innings together and finished the season 9-12.

Ethan Vogt, a former Ridgewater and Minesota Gophers hurler, earned the win on the mound. He walked one and struck out five.

James Cortex and Chad Scearcy had two hits apiece for the Lakers.

Chris Braaten, who drove in the lone NL-Sunburg run with a fielder's choice in the second inning, took the loss. He walked two and struck out six.
