Men's College Basketball: Three-pointer at buzzer lifts Central Lakes past Warriors

WILLMAR — Former Melrose standout Isaac Sawyer nailed a 3-pointer at the buzzer to lift Central Lakes to a 74-73 win over a Ridgewater team that led virtually the entire game Saturday at the Ridgewater gym.

Ridgewater (2-2) was hanging onto the lead late in the game but the Warriors made just one of six free throws in the final 45 seconds, said Ridgewater head coach Bob Knutson.

“We could have iced it at the line but we didn’t do it and then they hit the shot at the end,” Knutson said. “We had our chances and just didn’t get it done.”

Terrance Lockett led the Warriors with 19 points and Kiree Robinson had 14 points and 4 assists.

Beau Herrig and Joe Leuze both scored 8 points for the Warriors.

Central Lakes’ Mario Miller scored a game-high 22 points and Sawyer finished with 15.

Knutson said his team’s unhappy ending may have been payback.

“Zac Pendleton hit a runner at the buzzer to beat (Central Lakes) last year so this was kind of a get-even type of thing,” Knutson said. “But I was really proud of our guys. They were tired. This was Central Lakes’ only game this week and we played three really tough games.”

Ridgewater is off until playing host to the North Dakota State College of Science on Dec. 4 at the Ridgewater gym.
