College Baseball: Warriors drop 2 to Iowa Western

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa — The Ridgewater College baseball team dropped two games to Iowa Western on Saturday, but head coach Dennis Boe said he’s not concerned about wins and losses at this point in the season.

Iowa Western’s Erik Swanson allowed just a run on three hits while striking out eight in the Reivers’ 7-1 win over the Warriors in the first game of a doublehead.

The Reivers’ Brayden Young one-hit the Warriors and struck out eight in a 2-0 win in game two.

But Iowa Western is the top-ranked team in NJCAA Division I — the Warriors play in Division III — so Boe was pleased by his team’s efforts over the weekend.

“I couldn’t be happier with how our baseball team is playing right now,” Boe said. “They’re playing tough teams right now and they’ve been doing really well.”

Mitch Champagne, Gideon Burnham and Kyle Brazil had the Warriors’ hits in game one and Champagne broke up Young’s no-hit bid in the second game.

The Warriors’ grueling schedule continues this weekend when they travel to Indian Hills, in Centerville, Iowa, to play four games on Saturday and Sunday. Indian Hills is the No. 4 team in NJCAA Division I.

“Wins and losses are not important right now,” Boe said. “It’s who we’re playing and how tough we’re playing, and right now they’re really battling.”
