Ridgewater men roll past Spartans

WILLMAR -- The Ridgewater men's basketball team ended a dismal season on a high note, snapping a 14-game losing streak with an 81-69 win over Fergus Falls on Saturday.

Fergus Falls' Shane Bosek, a former Minnewaska star, scored 31 points and had 8 rebounds, but his efforts weren't enough to counter a Warriors team that had five players scored between 12 and 17 points.

"We led the whole game, and they just kept playing with more confidence, with more energy," said Warriors head coach Bob Knutson. "They didn't get tired and played phenomenal defense."

The Warriors ended the season with eight players, having lost several during the season due to academic or personal issues.

But on Saturday, Zak Pendleton and Neil Helgeson scored 17 points, Tyler Pendleton had 16 and Jake Rambow and Jordan Schwarz both scored 12 to lead the Warriors.

Ridgewater shot 48 percent from the field compared to Fergus Falls' 33 percent.

"I kept telling them the last three weeks, 'You're the ones who really cared on this team. You're the ones who believed it,' " Knutson said.

The victory also knocked Fergus Falls out of a first-place tie with Central Lakes in the MCAC Southern Division race.

Those two teams and Anoka-Ramsey and Rochester open the MCAC tournament on Friday at Anoka-Ramsey.
