College Volleyball: Warriors top 'Jays

Ridgewater's Hailey Leiding rises up for a kill attempt against Minnesota West Wednesday night. The Warriors improved to 6-0 in the MCAC and will host defending national champion Rochester Friday. Clay Cunningham /Tribune

WILLMAR—A dominant start made up for some late-match sluggishness for the Ridgewater volleyball team, which improved to 6-0 in MCAC play with a 3-1 win over Minnesota West Wednesday.

Baylie Kubesh had 46 assists while Hailey Leiding and Ashley Vealetzek had 12 and 11 kills respectively to help the Warriors come out on top 25-10, 25-13, 23-25, 25-19.

A sweep seemed like a foregone conclusion early. The Warriors scored 16 of the final 17 points of the first set, then carried that domination over into the second.

But the Bluejays, who have just one win this season, stayed alive with a third set win before Ridgewater put them away in the fourth.

"We certainly didn't finish the match as well as we started," Warrior head coach Joe Sussenguth said. "All of us, including myself, could have executed our positions with more responsibility."

Ashley Froelich and Kiana Johnson added eight kills apiece. Jamie Goblirsch made 15 digs and Leiding had a team-best three aces.

Wednesday's game was the Warriors' final tuneup before Friday's showdown with fellow conference unbeaten Rochester, the reigning NJCAA Division III national champions.

"This was a divisional win that we needed to have and hopefully we can continue to defend our home court this weekend," Sussenguth said.

Friday's game begins at 7 p.m. at Ridgewater.
