Roundup: Ridgewater sees win streak end in tough five-set match

WILLMAR — Ridgewater saw its 10-match win streak come to an end at the hands of No. 5 Minnesota State Community Technical College at Fergus Falls in Willmar Wednesday night.

Baylie Kubesh led the match with 56 set assists but the No. 3 Warriors found themselves playing most of the match from behind. The first set revealed the tight nature of the match as the Spartans took it 25-22.

The Warriors bounced back with a commanding 25-12 win but that was as lopsided as it would get. The Spartans took set three 25-21 to set up important fourth and fifth sets. Ridgewater outlasted Minnesota State 28-26 in the fourth but the script flipped in the tiebreaker with the Spartans winning 20-18.

Ridgewater head coach Joe Sussenguth said an overly aggressiveness attack caused some of the miscues.

"Unfortunately, we pressed too hard offensively, over-attacking the ball at times," Sussenguth said. "Our location also wasn't as consistent as we've had. The fight never left us though. We worked extremely hard, just came up a few points short."

Minnesota State took advantage of the lack of consistency, being led by Lexi Frederick and Kayla Pring who each finished with 17 kills.

The Spartans entered the game on an impressive hot streak, having won their last 18 matches. Their last loss came against Northland on Sept. 10. They also lost the first meeting against Ridgewater on Aug. 31.

It's also a wake-up call for the Warriors who now are tied with the Spartans at 11-1 in the conference. Sussenguth says the loss was good for preparation.

Ridgewater has two matches left before the postseason gets underway. They'll play next at 7:30 p.m. on Friday in La Crosse, Wisconsin against Western Technical College.
