WILLMAR — The Hannah Johnson-Sam Christoffer connection is going to make some opposing coaches tremble this season.

The duo seemingly scored at will Tuesday night, contributing to four of Willmar's five goals in a 5-0 win to top Rocori in the Central Lakes Conference opener. The Cardinals scored two goals in the first half and amped things up with three in the second half.

Christoffer scored two first half goals thanks to passes by Johnson, including one especially strong pass that Christoffer settled and volleyed over the outstretched hands of Rocori goalkeeper Janessa Steil for a 2-0 lead.

Johnson took control in the second half with rockets that turned into two goals to complete her two goal, two assist day. Madi Linbo rounded out the scoring with a 76th minute goal off an assist by Amy Linden.

Willmar will face tough competition next with a visit to take on Brainerd, a perennial power, Thursday.

Willmar was the aggressor but Rocori scored with 25 seconds left in regulation to forge a tie with the Cardinals in a Central Lakes Conference match on Tuesday in Cold Spring.

Willmar outshot the Spartans 13-9.

"We really dominated play," said Cardinals head coach Jeff Winter. "They were just able to capitalize on their chances better."

Neither team scored in the first half but Rocori scored on a penalty kick early in the second half. Willmar's Kelvin Gomez-Padilla knotted the score 20 minutes later on a penalty kick.

The Cardinals' Carlos Robles scored on an assist from Cesar Leiva two minutes after Gomez-Padilla's tally for a 2-1 lead.

Willmar goalie Zach Courtney earned his team the tie, even though the Cardinals led at the time, Winter said.

Courtney turned back a shot to the upper right corner to preserve the 2-1 lead.

"I don't know how (Courtney) got it," Winter said. "It was an amazing save. It kept us in it."

Neither team scored in the two-half overtime.

The Cardinals play Brainerd at 5 p.m. Thursday at the Kennedy School field in Willmar.
