Card softball in 5AAA driver's seat
BIG LAKE - Mackenzie Jones dominated Rocori from the pitching circle and Willmar scored the game's only runs in the top of the seventh as the Cardinals took command in the Section 5AAA playoffs with a 2-0 victory over the Spartans in the winners bracket final on Tuesday.
Jones worked a complete game and scattered eight hits while striking out 10 and issuing no walks. The Cardinals defense played error-free ball.
Rocori's Caitlin Heinen was nearly as effective as Jones, allowing only two hits while striking out eight.
Willmar's Makenna Hogan and Jones managed their teams' lone hits and Hogan and Hannah Johnson scored the seventh-inning runs.
The victory was payback for Rocori's doubleheader sweep in Willmar on May 15 that ended the Cardinals' chances at winning the Central Lakes Conference championship.
By winning the 5AAA winners bracket final, Willmar plays the losers bracket finalist at 4 p.m. Thursday in Big Lake with the section championship and a trip to the Class AAA state tournament on the line.
Willmar, now 3-0 in 5AAA play, would need to win just once to claim the section crown. The losers bracket team would have to defeat the Cardinals twice on Thursday to advance.
