Stingers thrash Alexandria 24-5

ALEXANDRIA — What seemed like an easy win for Willmar turned out to be a blowout win for the Stingers as Willmar exploded for 18 runs in the final three innings to collect a 24-5 victory over the last-place Alexandria Blue Anchors.

The Stingers are now just a half-game out of first place in the North Division of the Northwoods League after first-place Waterloo lost on the road in Duluth.

Willmar and Alexandria play again today at 7:05 p.m. in Willmar at Bill Taunton Stadium.

Willmar bashed four home runs Tuesday, one each from Marc Flores, Michael Suchy, Danny Brennan and Nick Halamandaris, and needed only 15 hits to manufacture the win.

The Stingers took advantage of 10 walks and nine wild pitches from the Alexandria pitching staff.

Colton Bottomley was 3-for-5 to score three times, while Halamandaris knocked in five runs and Flores another four. Flores and Logan Moon also scored three runs each.

It could have been more of a blowout, but Willmar stranded 11 runners in the 3½-hour game that saw Willmar improve to 18-9.

Josh Matheson benefitted from the offensive outburst to pick up the win. The right-hander surrendered six hits, two runs and three walks over the first five innings. Four Stingers followed to preserve the win.

Willmar sent up 12 batters to the plate in the six-run eighth and 15 in its nine-run ninth. Every Stinger that visited the plate scored.
