Stingers fizzle out at Rochester

ROCHESTER — Matt Kent pitched eight dominant innings and Matt Halloran socked a three-run homer, and the Rochester Honkers picked up their first win of the second half 6-1 over the Willmar Stingers on Friday at Mayo Field.

The Stingers fell to 3-5 and are in fifth place in the Northwoods League North Division. They play 7:05 p.m. today at Rochester.

Kent mowed down the Stingers, fanning nine in eight innings and throwing just 95 pitches. He surrendered five hits and his only run came on a fifth-inning home run to Max Kuhn.

Chris Kubitz, who started and worked 4.1 innings for Willmar, was done in by a five-run second inning.

Kevin Barker and Jared Deacon drew one-out walks off Kubitz and after a fielder’s choice for the second out Halloran went deep.

The Honkers weren’t done, as Kalei Hanawahine doubled and Carter Burgess hit Rochester’s second home run of the inning to take a 5-0 lead.

Michael Murray and Bobby McCormack pitched the rest of the way for Willmar. Murray allowed  a run on an RBI infield hit by Barker.
