Rochester hammers Stingers 13-4

WILLMAR — The Honkers have had the Stingers’ number in the second half.

Rochester notched just its third win of the half — two against the Stingers — 13-4 over Willmar on Thursday at Bill Taunton Stadium.

The Honkers teed off on Willmar starter Nick Bates for five hits and three runs in two innings. Rochester catcher Jared Deacon hit his first homer of the year, and Kalei Hana-wahine and Max Murphy each doubled off Bates.

It didn’t get any easier for Jack Hegarty in relief of Bates, who recorded just one out in the third while allowing six runs on five hits to put the Stingers in a 9-0 hole.

Willmar reliever Sheldon Lee stabilized the game after the third with 3.2 scoreless innings, but the damage was done.

The Stingers put up a three-spot in the third on a Michael Suchy single and bases-loaded walks to Max Kuhn and Nick Halamandaris.

Marc Flores singled in a run in the fourth to cut the deficit to 9-4.

Rochester starter Tyler Eppler didn’t last through the third, but Nathan Roth was dominant in relief, tossing 6.1 innings of one-run ball while striking out six.

The Stingers are now 8-10 in the second half in the Northwoods League North Division. They host Rochester again 7:05 p.m. today.

They also fell to 31-22 overall, a half-game behind the Duluth Huskies — and a playoff spot.
