Brennan powers Stingers

WILLMAR — Danny Brennan homered and Willmar batted around in the first inning as the Stingers topped the Madison Mallards 4-2 Wednesday at Bill Taunton Stadium.

Sheldon Lee delivered six innings and allowed one run to keep the Stingers in playoff contention in the Northwoods League North Division.

Willmar bumped its second-half record to 14-17 and 37-29 overall. The Duluth Huskies, who lead the playoff chase by two games, kept pace with the Stingers with a 12-0 victory over Wisconsin on Wednesday.

Michael Suchy, batting out of the leadoff spot, got hit by a pitch from Madison starter Reilly Hovis in the first at bat of the game.

No. 2 hitter Brennan made Hovis pay, lining a home run off the scoreboard in right-center field.

Zack Tillery made it 3-0 when he walked, took second and third on a balk, and scored on a Colton Bottomley single.

Bottomley also drove in the Stingers’ fourth run with a fifth-inning single.

The Stingers need a combination of two Willmar wins and two Duluth losses to have a shot at the playoffs, with four games left to play for both teams.

Willmar hosts Green Bay 7:05 p.m. today at Bill Taunton Stadium.
