Stingers split twin bill with Madison
MADISON, Wis. — The Stingers’ power binge continued in Game 1 of Thursday’s doubleheader at Madison, beating the Mallards 7-6, and Willmar was nearly no-hit in Game 2, losing 5-0.
Dan Motl and Jack Ross homered for the Stingers, both solo shots, and Reagan Fowler was 2-for-3 with three RBIs.
Fowler and Ross knocked in runs in the first with base hits, and Fowler cranked a two-run double in the second.
A.J. Puckett pitched a seven-inning complete game, scattering seven hits and fanning two.
Game 2 was all Madison.
Mallards’ starter Rob McDonnell took a no-hitter into the seventh inning, before allowing back-to-back singles to Nick Rivera and Ross, the only hits the Stingers would manage in the game.
McDonnell walked two and struck out five.
Willmar starter Brady Anderson was touched up for five runs, the big blow coming on Pete Alonso’s three-run homer in the fourth inning.
The Stingers are now 10-7 in the Northwoods League North Division second half, half a game behind first-place Eau Claire.
They play another doubleheader 4:35 p.m. today at Madison.
