Stingers let one get away at Alexandria

ALEXANDRIA — Alexandria stormed back from a four-run deficit to tie the game in the eighth, and won it in the 12th on two bases-loaded walks, beating the Willmar Stingers 7-6 on Monday at Knute Nelson Memorial Park.

Tied at five for four innings, the Stingers had gone up 6-5 on Jack Ross’ sacrifice fly in the top of the 12th.

Tyler Cohen came in for the save and put the first two batters on with a single and a walk.

An intentional walk loaded the bases to set up a force at home, but Cohen followed it with a walk to Rickey Sanchez to force in the tying run and another walk to Aaron Gretz to score Craig Nennig with the winning run.

The Stingers built their lead with single runs in the first, seventh and eighth, and two in the fourth on Max Ayoub’s bases-loaded single.

Rivera hit his 13th homer in the eighth and had four hits on the night.

Sean Beesley notched three hits, including two doubles, and scored a run.

Andrew Towns started for Willmar and worked six one-run innings while striking out four, leaving with a 3-1 lead.

Trailing 5-1 in the eighth, the Blue Anchors touched up reliever Brantley Claunch for four runs, capped by a three-run homer off the bat of Nehwon Norkeh, tying it 5-5 until the 12th.

Colton Boucher came in for Claunch and tossed three scoreless innings with five strikeouts.

Notes: Former Stinger Isaac Ballou, playing in the Washington Nationals’ minor league system, was promoted from the low Single-A Hagerstown Suns to the high Single-A Potomac Nationals ... Four current Stingers — Casey Hughston, Hutton Moyer, Sean Beesley and Matt Geislinger were selected to play for North Team One in the 2014 Northwoods League Big League Dreams Showcase. They will face South Team One 4:05 p.m. Aug. 5 at Warner Park in Madison, Wisconsin.
