Stingers notebook: Reynolds hangs onto hit lead in Division I
WILLMAR — Texas A&M senior Mikey Reynolds, who played for the Willmar Stingers in 2010, continued his hot hitting this season and leads Division I with 38 hits through March 17. He’s also riding a 21-game hit streak, which is 7th in Aggie history. Last week, Reynolds shared the hit lead at 31 with another former Stinger, Central Arkansas’ Forrestt Allday. Allday finished the week with 33 hits and dropped to a tie for 16th in the nation.
Allday’s Bearcats cracked the Baseball America rankings for the first time ever at No. 23. Other ranked teams with Stinger connections include No. 10 Kentucky (Max Kuhn) and No. 25 San Diego (Dillon Haupt, Chris Woolley). Florida Gulf Coast, No. 25 last week, dropped from the rankings.
Ex-Twin Newman to manage Alexandria team
According to a report in the Alexandria Echo Press, former Minnesota Twin Al Newman will be the field manager for the Alexandria team in 2013. The Beetles franchise, under new ownership, is working to rename the team the Blue Anchors. Newman played for the Twins for five seasons, including World Series winners in 1987 and 1991. He was the team’s third base coach from 2002 to 2005.
Haupt leads nation in doubles; Woolley nabs monthly honor
2012 Stinger Haupt is leading Division I with 13 doubles through March 17. He’s hitting .392 to pace the Toreros and is slugging .696 with a .490 on-base percentage. 2011 Stinger Woolley, the Toreros’ starting shortstop, was named the West Coast Conference Player of the Month on March 15. Woolley went 10-for-22 in February with a double and 7 RBIs.
2012 Stinger Hunter Dozier (Stephen F. Austin) is batting .377 with 3 home runs and 8 doubles in 69 at bats … Kuhn (Kentucky) has posted a .293 batting average, 1 home run and 16 RBIs, and is getting on base at a .432 clip … Jerad McCrummen (Texas Tech) has been a relief ace with a 1.77 ERA, 17 strikeouts and 3 saves in 20 innings for the Red Raiders … Sean Dwyer (Florida Gulf Coast) is hitting .359 with 3 home runs and 15 RBIs; teammate Ricky Knapp has a 0.87 ERA and is 4-0 with 22 strikeouts in 31 innings
