Marshall downs Willmar in three

MARSHALL — Marshall, a 27-9 state tournament team last fall, appeared in top form to open this season, defeating Willmar in three matches on Thursday.

Willmar's Carly Wedel led the team with eight kills, she was the Cardinals' top setter with 16 assists and she had seven digs.

Caitlin Ogdahl had six kills and three blocks and Sydney Olson and Sydney Schnichels both had four kills.

The Cardinals play next against Jordan at 11 a.m. Saturday at Hopkins.

The Wolverines finished Thursday's season-opening match with 19 ace serves, including six in a row by Abigail Pieper and five straight from Syd Thein in a three-set win against Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart.

Danni Burns and Piper Asche each finished with nine kills for MACCRAY, with Burns chipping in with a team-high 12 digs.

Sara Kottke and Kimberly Novotny both finished with five kills for the Mustangs. Emily VanderVoort came up with eight set assists in the loss.

The Litchfield tennis team kept up the pace by winning three games and dropping just one match at the Sauk Centre Quad on Thursday.

The Dragons defeated Yellow Medicine East and Sauk Centre by 7-0 scores, and the Dragons defeated Park Rapids 6-1. They on three matches on Wednesday by identical scores.
