The Willmar WarHawks have seen plenty of injuries in their inaugural year -- especially in net -- and those injuries proved to be a problem over the weekend as the WarHawks allowed 20 goals in two games, losing both.
The WarHawks lost to Breezy Point 10-6 on Saturday after falling 10-1 to Alexandria on Friday.
On Saturday, Willmar played its first home game since Oct. 29 and the team started well. The WarHawks scored a pair of goals in the first period while new goaltender Jacob Anderson held Breezy Point to only one. Gabe Gauer scored first, his third of the season and Dylan Gast gave the WarHawks a 2-1 lead later in the period.
Kyle Wendorf started the second period with a power play goal but Breezy point countered with their own power play goal halfway through the second to make it 3-2. A minute later, Wendorf scored again but Breezy Point also scored to push the game to 4-3 through two periods.
It all fell apart for Willmar in the third period. Breezy Point scored a pair of power play goals in the first minute to take the lead momentarily but Willmar bounced back with a shorthanded goal from Gast, his second goal and fourth point of the night. Breezy Point took the lead for good at 8:16 in the third period and piled it on after that.
Willmar struggled defensively on Friday night, as well.
Recently acquired Matt McCoy got the start in net but allowed four goals on 11 shots in the first period. Hayden Funk, the last non-injured goaltender on the active roster, finished the first period and had a strong second period, only allowing one goal while making 16 saves. McCoy re-entered in the third period and allowed five more goals.
On Friday, Wendorf scored Willmar’s only goal on a power play on assists from Riley Tigrett and Gabe Gauer. Wendorf had three goals and two assists on the weekend.Saturday’s result Breezy Point 10, Willmar 6 Breezy Point (15-3-1)............. 1 2 7 — 10 Willmar (6-8)............... 2 2 2 — 6 FIRST PERIOD – (1) Willmar: Gabe Gauer (Danny Nugent, Riley Dixon) 3:40 pp (2) Breezy Point: Steven Kukla (Tyler Larwood, Andrew Heckaman) 13:21 (3) Willmar: Dylan Gast (Kyle Wendorf, Max Oelkers) 14:45 SECOND PERIOD – (4) Willmar: Wendorf (Gast, Gauer) 6:01 pp (5) Breezy Point: Larwood (Kukla) 10:56 pp (6) Willmar: Wendorf (Gast, Alec Skar) 12:05 (7) Breezy Point: Nikolas Boyer (Christian Lenzmeier) 13:31 THIRD PERIOD – (8) Breezy Point: Wyatt Stotts (Alex Flicek, Josh Laven) 0:30 pp (9) Breezy Point: Laven (Tristyn Sabina) 0:52 pp (10) Willmar: Gast (Wendorf, Skar) 5:05 sh (11) Breezy Point: Sabina (Laven) 8:16 (12) Breezy Point: Nikolas Boyer (Matej Krasny, Drake Hill) 9:20 (13) Breezy Point: Lenzmeier (Flicek) 10:03 (14) Breezy Point: Larwood 13:42 (15) Breezy Point: Kukla 14:12 (16) Willmar: Jordan Cooper (Danny Nugent, Gauer) 18:48 pp GOALIE SAVES – Breezy Point: Sam Moberg 36 … Willmar: Jacob Anderson 29 Friday’s result Alexandria 10, Willmar 1 Willmar............. 0 0 1 — 1 Alexandria............... 4 1 5 — 10 FIRST PERIOD – (1) Alexandria: Alex Bowe (Brenden Payne) 1:24 (2) Alexandria: Payne (Caleb Anderson, Jack Mellstrom) 9:23 (3) Alexandria: Steven Gustafson (Bowe, Logan Nelson) 10:10 pp (4) Alexandria: Anderson (Emil Lindfors, Mellstrom) 12:58 SECOND PERIOD – (5) Alexandria: Logan Norman (Nelson, Riley Meyer) 16:43 THIRD PERIOD – (6) Alexandria: Norman (Nelson, Tosten Mann) 0:45 sh (7) Alexandria: Nelson (Meyer, Gustafson) 1:01 (8) Alexandria: Lindfors (Payne, Anderson) 1:55 (9) Alexandria: Payne (Bowe, Jack Cernohous) 5:30 (10) Willmar: Kyle Wendorf (Riley Tigrett, Gabe Gauer) 11:35 pp (11) Alexandria: Meyer (Nelson, Gustafson) 14:14 pp
