The Minnesota Conservation Corps used blow torches last year as part of efforts to eradicate Palmer amaranth on conservation lands in Yellow Medicine and Lyon counties. Contaminated seed was to blame for the noxious weed's presence.

It's a messy point to make, but Holly Hatlewick, manager of the Renville County Soil and Water Conservation District, made it by showing the different water infiltration rates in soils that range from low to high in organic content. She used a rainfall simulator to show that cover crops increase organic matter and the health of soil during a presentation last week to 75 to 80 attendees of an event in Renville.
