Les Kaenel, commander of VFW Post 1639 in Willmar, helps Santa gather his things before seeing kids Thursday at Jefferson Area Learning Center in Willmar. Along with Early Childhood Programs staff, the VFW of Willmar for many years has helped Santa and his elves provide gifts to all the students there.

The store has started a new program called Corners of Your Field, which donates thrift store gift cards to churches and nonprofits to help in the community.

Jesse Borer and his daughter Nellie fill up the Blessing Box with goods Monday at Woodland Centers on the corner of Sixth street Southeast and Willmar Avenue. The Blessing Box is one of two boxes that Borer plans to place around Willmar. Items that can go in the box include non-perishable items such as diapers, books, canned food and toothpaste. Borer said there is a lot of traffic around that area, and he hopes the placement will help people notice the box.

The Willmar Area Food Shelf's branch office in New London closed last week. Other programs at the site, including a free household exchange program operated by The Link and a secondhand clothing store operated by the Evangelical Covenant Church, are still there. The Willmar Area Food Shelf's satellite location at the Campus Ministry Center of Ridgewater College was also closed.
