Board members for the Bluenose Gopher Brewery launched a capital campaign to make it the region's first craft brewery based on the cooperative model. The brewery will be located along the Minnesota River in Granite Falls, hometown of the late Andrew Volstead, remembered for his legislation making farmer cooperatives possible and prohibition. Construction is underway on a sugar beet receiving station along U.S. Highway 71, south of Belgrade. Owned by the Southern Minnesota Beet Sugar Cooperative in Renville, the 30-acre site will store 100,000 tons of beets. The First District plant in Litchfield processes 6 million pounds of milk every day, and from that, 3.9 million pounds are processed into cheese.
