The former Willmar Theater in the 300 block of 4th Street Southwest turns 80 this year. The stylized art-deco design, a soaring marquee and an indoor fountain made it “Worth driving miles and miles for,” proclaimed the opening-night program on Sept. 21, 1936. A 25-piece Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra played before the feature starring Robert Taylor and Joan Crawford in “The Gorgeous Hussy.” It’s one of many buildings that could benefit from preservation.
