Kurt Nelson has an agreement to sell about 75 acres of land in Lake Johanna Township of Pope County to Pheasants Forever, which wants to transfer it to the state of Minnesota. The property contains fens, wetlands, an oak- covered esker ridge and the county's only designated trout stream cuts through a corner of it.

Darren Augeson had spotted this big buck twice before the season, but didn't know its antlers sprouted 18-points until he reached him after downing him in a grove north of Montevideo on Nov. 9. Brad Karl of Hutchinson shot his 24-point buck on public lands on the south end of Big Kandiyohi Lake on the last day of the 2004 firearm season. It put him in the record books with a Boone and Crockett score of 225, but he hasn't shot a deer since moving to a new hunting locale north of Bemidji. He's planning to return to the spot that produced this trophy for the start of the 2010 season, hoping to end his dry spell. Tribune file photo
