The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources recently designated the Bonanza Valley Groundwater Management Area. It is designed to protect the groundwater resources in an area including portions of Stearns, Pope, and Kandiyohi counties as well as lesser areas of Douglas, Meeker, Swift and Todd counties.

The Chippewa River Project is aiming to increase the amount of perennial cover in the watershed to improve water quality. Part of that effort included last summer’s Simon Lake Bio-Blitz, shown here, where participants could view the benefits of perennial cover. Two reports on water quality in the watershed are  available for public comment until Sept. 7.
