Butch Halterman has been collecting maple sap since early in February on land along the Minnesota River south of Montevideo. It's the earliest ever by nearly a month. He walked across sheets of ice to tap the trees as the floodplain area had been flooded in December.

Permits to carry handguns in Minnesota rose in 2016 to the highest number of permits issued in a single year since the current firearm laws were implemented in 2003. Kandiyohi County issued nearly twice as many permits in 2016 as 2015, and Lac qui Parle County nearly quadrupled the number it issued.
