Duininck Companies Inc. began moving 2,000 cubic yards of material Wednesday to raise portions of the main levee in Montevideo. The work will assure the entire length of the main levee is able to protect against a 23-foot-high level of water on the Minnesota River, with two feet of freeboard. That would provide the city with protection against a 1997-level flood, where waters reached 24 feet high. The work is being done as a precaution, City Manager Steve Jones said. The city of Granite Falls will start work on improving its main flood levee in the area behind Richter Field, above, and the City Shop/Fire Hall. If the river were to rise over the levee it would pour toward the residential area in the background and potentially as far as the water tower at the center of the horizon line in this photo.
