The Chippewa River Project is aiming to increase the amount of perennial cover in the watershed to improve water quality. Part of that effort included last summer’s Simon Lake Bio-Blitz, shown here, where participants could view the benefits of perennial cover. Two reports on water quality in the watershed are  available for public comment until Sept. 7.

Lowell Blikre, principal investigator with Bear Creek Archeology of Cresco, Iowa, shows the bands of soil in an excavation site at the confluence of the Chippewa and Minnesota Rivers in Montevideo. The bands are the result of flooding at the site over the past 2,000 year, and each band holds the artifacts from different occupations there. Eight different occupations were identified.
