Cars drive Wednesday past a sign announcing the start of Monday's detour on U.S. Highway 71 for a $6 million resurfacing and construction project from the junction of U.S. Highway 71 and state Highway 23 north of Willmar to just north of state Highway 9. There will be no through traffic on Highway 71 for the entire duration of the project.

The 2017 bonding bill provides $2.6 million to extend the Glacial Lakes State Trail from New London to Sibley State Park, including the purchase of a 155-acre tract of land along U.S. Highway 71 that will extend the park's boundary and provide a crucial link to the trail. In 2015, the DeLong family sold the land to the Minnesota Parks and Trails Council, which has been holding the property until state money was available.
