Willmar Municipal Utilities has indicated to the Environmental Protection Agency that it is pursuing renewable energy projects, including solar, as part of efforts to reduce air quality impacts. Failure to approve the solar project could endanger negotiations with EPA regarding the agency's efforts to tighten Willmar's power plant air quality emissions requirements. The students in Matt Olson's construction trades class at Montevideo High School are building the home with the aim to make it 50 percent more energy efficient than the traditional Habitat for Humanity house. Dan Handeen, a Montevideo native, served as assistant project manager for the University of Minnesota Solar Decathlon competition entry known as the Solar Icon House. He said solar powered homes could become a reality in Minnesota during a presentation Thursday.
