Butch Halterman has been collecting maple sap since early in February on land along the Minnesota River south of Montevideo. It's the earliest ever by nearly a month. He walked across sheets of ice to tap the trees as the floodplain area had been flooded in December.

Although he doesn't support the new legislation -- expected to become law -- that would allow liquor stores to be open Sundays, Edwards said he has no choice but to be open to be competitive with big stores in Willmar.
