Chris Ring, a Navy combat veteran, jumps into the Mississippi River before swimming off from Snuffy’s Landing in Becker on July 16. He is trying to become the first American to swim the length of the Mississippi River. He set out from the river’s headwaters a month ago and expects to arrive in the Gulf of Mexico this November. He’s swimming an average of 14 miles a day on behalf of Legacies Alive, a Pennsylvania nonprofit that honors fallen members of the military.
