Lakeland Drive, a major traffic route for the city of Willmar, will be reconstructed between Civic Center Drive and Willmar Avenue Southeast as part of an estimated $8.4 million project. The project, if approved, will also replace an inadequate sanitary sewer line under Lakeland Drive with a larger interceptor line to handle present and future sewer needs and replace a deficient sewer lift station next to the MinnWest Technology Campus. The 75-year-old mural at the auditorium contains many mysteries. It tells the story of the settling of the Midwest, the legacy of the U.S.-Indian Wars, and those that followed: The Civil, Spanish-American and World War I. It celebrates the nation’s constitutional rights, from the right of assembly and the press to the end of slavery. It also contains airplanes that look like modern-day stealth bombers.
