For several weeks this summer, Willmar drivers have dealt with several street improvement projects. Now those street construction projects are starting to wrap up. The intersections at Litchfield Avenue and First Street, shown in the background here, and at Willmar Avenue and First Street are now open. Work on Lakeland Drive is nearing completion.

Kevin Dettler, house manager at the James House in Willmar, said it was "very fortunate" that none of the residents in the halfway rehabilitation home were injured when lightning struck house and caused a fire in the roof Monday. At the time, Dettler said he did not know where the residents would go if they were unable to occupy the facility. Fire officials later said the Salvation Army was assisting with locating temporary housing.play button

The Willmar Fire Department is at the scene of a house fire at 1423 S.W. Kandiyohi Avenue.  The home was reportedly struck by lightning about noon today.

In September 2010, 23 individuals from 12 different countries became naturalized citizens. Many watched on as the candidates stated the Oath of Allegiance, and received their certificates of naturalization at  Grand Canyon National Park. Local officials are hoping a similar ceremony will be held in Willmar in 2018.
