Highway 23 Coalition 

A brochure shows the two gaps that remain in the four-lane on state Highway 23 between Willmar and Interstate 94. The city of Willmar has joined the Highway 23 Coalition that is seeking state money to complete the four-lane. The coalition is comprised of cities, counties and businesses along the state Highway 23 corridor.

For several weeks this summer, Willmar drivers have dealt with several street improvement projects. Now those street construction projects are starting to wrap up. The intersections at Litchfield Avenue and First Street, shown in the background here, and at Willmar Avenue and First Street are now open. Work on Lakeland Drive is nearing completion.

The Willmar City Council has amended its policy that allows businesses to reduce the purchase price of land in the Industrial Park by bringing in new jobs and increasing the property's tax value. The write-down in the amended policy taking effect Jan. 1 will be capped at 75 percent of the purchase price. Businesses will also need to pay their new employees at least $14.25 per hour to be eligible for the write-down.

The city of Willmar is exploring the possible purchase of the old Hardware Hank Express building, which is located directly behind the City Auditorium and adjacent to the City Office Building. The property could be used to expand the city offices.

Members of the Willmar City Council and city staff attended a retreat Saturday at Bremer Bank in Willmar. The goal was to prioritize projects the council wants to focus on in the next few years. In this exercise they were asked to place dots on the projects they supported the most.

Stormwater ponds like this one near Baker Field in southwest Willmar are scattered across the city. These ponds gather excess stormwater and store it until it's able to drain. Willmar Public Works is responsible for maintaining these ponds to make sure they operate efficiently and correctly.
