The Glacial Ridge Curling Club's effort to build a $2.24 million dedicated curling facility near the Willmar Civic Center cleared a hurdle this week when the Willmar City Council gave permission for the city administrator and attorney to prepare a lease agreement. The club plans to build the facility, and the city will own it and lease it back.

The Willmar City Council has decided to moves its meetings to the Kandiyohi County Health and Human Services building on the north edge of Willmar, where the Kandiyohi County Board also meets, as shown here Tuesday. When the county building was constructed in 1995, the board room was originally planned to be shared between the two bodies, but the city moved back downtown in 1996.

The Glacial Ridge Curling Club is hoping to partner with the city of Willmar to build a stand-alone curling facility near the Willmar Civic Center. A dedicated curling venue would mean more ice time for curlers and more opportunities to bring large-scale curling events to Willmar.

The Willmar City Council next week will consider options for replacing the ice refrigeration system at the Willmar Civic Center. Public Works Director Sean Christensen is recommending a $3.3 million project which would include system capability for three ice sheets along with indoor space for the Zamboni.

It was a full house Monday at the Willmar City Council meeting, as members of the public continued to speak out against Councilor Ron Christianson and the comments he apparently liked on Facebook. Also attending the meeting were members of Boy Scout Troop 224 working on a “Citizenship in the Community” merit badge.
