The Willmar Civic Center is getting a new ice refrigeration system, which is replacing the current system that is over 35 years old. Some of the overall project begin this fall, and the new refrigeration system will be installed in the spring.

The Glacial Ridge Curling Club's effort to build a $2.24 million dedicated curling facility near the Willmar Civic Center cleared a hurdle this week when the Willmar City Council gave permission for the city administrator and attorney to prepare a lease agreement. The club plans to build the facility, and the city will own it and lease it back.

The Glacial Ridge Curling Club is hoping to partner with the city of Willmar to build a stand-alone curling facility near the Willmar Civic Center. A dedicated curling venue would mean more ice time for curlers and more opportunities to bring large-scale curling events to Willmar.

The Willmar City Council next week will consider options for replacing the ice refrigeration system at the Willmar Civic Center. Public Works Director Sean Christensen is recommending a $3.3 million project which would include system capability for three ice sheets along with indoor space for the Zamboni.
