While the number of new job openings in the five counties of the Upper Minnesota River Valley has risen substantially, the "quality" of those openings are questioned by the Jobs Now Coalition. Only 38 percent of all openings offer health care, the smallest share of openings in any of the state's 13 economic regions.

John Handeen, a World War II veteran, was among those Tuesday at a rally in Montevideo who encouraged state legislators to obtain funding for a veterans home. Handeen said it is especially needed to serve Vietnam veterans.

Butch Halterman has been collecting maple sap since early in February on land along the Minnesota River south of Montevideo. It's the earliest ever by nearly a month. He walked across sheets of ice to tap the trees as the floodplain area had been flooded in December.
