The Minnesota Department of Agriculture confirmed Friday a find of Palmer amaranth in Douglas County, making it the fourth county where the invasive weed has taken root in Minnesota.

The Minnesota Conservation Corps used blow torches last year as part of efforts to eradicate Palmer amaranth on conservation lands in Yellow Medicine and Lyon counties. Contaminated seed was to blame for the noxious weed's presence.

Each Palmer amaranth plant can produce as many as 1 million seeds. The weed is extremely competitive with crops and can quickly take over a field. (Dallas Peterson, Kansas State University)
