Brian Velde shows the difference in growth July 24 between his corn irrigated by a subsurface system and corn that has not been irrigated on his farm about six miles south of Granite Falls. It's a messy point to make, but Holly Hatlewick, manager of the Renville County Soil and Water Conservation District, made it by showing the different water infiltration rates in soils that range from low to high in organic content. She used a rainfall simulator to show that cover crops increase organic matter and the health of soil during a presentation last week to 75 to 80 attendees of an event in Renville.
