It's a messy point to make, but Holly Hatlewick, manager of the Renville County Soil and Water Conservation District, made it by showing the different water infiltration rates in soils that range from low to high in organic content. She used a rainfall simulator to show that cover crops increase organic matter and the health of soil during a presentation last week to 75 to 80 attendees of an event in Renville.

Cover crops did not impede harvest in this corn field in Renville County. They continue to improve the soil and its fertility after the crop is removed while reducing the potential for erosion and sequestering carbon.
