Butch Halterman has been collecting maple sap since early in February on land along the Minnesota River south of Montevideo. It's the earliest ever by nearly a month. He walked across sheets of ice to tap the trees as the floodplain area had been flooded in December.

As part of "Free Park Friday," Sibley State Park near New London will offer a free guided hike -- or snowshoe walk depending on trail conditions -- from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. the day after Thanksgiving.
