Willmar Municipal Airport

The Willmar Municipal Airport is holding a fly-in and drive-in event from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m Saturday and the public is encouraged to attend. Pilots are invited to bring their planes, while car collectors can take part in a car show. There will also be a freewill donation meal and, weather permitting, a formation flyover by Mooney aircraft.

The Willmar Municipal Airport Master Plan is nearing completion. The plan looks at the forecast for increased activity at the airport over the two decades and provides a plan for development at the airport to meet the possible demand. This could include runway expansions and increased hanger space.

A Cessna aircraft made a forced landing Wednesday in a soybean field along 75th Street Southwest, just southwest of the Willmar Municipal Airport. Eric Rudningen, who was one of two individuals in the crash, said Friday that he is OK but unable to comment further until the investigations are complete.

The F-14A Tomcat has been a fixture at the Willmar Municipal Airport for nearly 10 years. The Willmar City Council will decide at its next meeting whether to renew the lease with the Navy to keep the plane for at least another five years.
