MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — China has lifted a ban on Minnesota poultry imports that was imposed last year following an outbreak of avian flu. A Minneapolis Star Tribune report says China had been the state's No. 2 international market before the ban was imposed last November. Mexico is No. 1. Steve Olson is the executive director of the Minnesota Turkey Growers Association and the state Chicken and Egg Association. He says this week's announcement is great news that makes Christmas a little merrier.
Katie Elaine Lewis wiped away tears as she stood before a Ramsey County District Court judge Friday and admitted to pinching the nose of her 5-month-old son, stopping him from breathing. Lewis, 24, pleaded guilty of domestic assault by strangulation in the May 2 incident at Children's Hospital in St. Paul, in which she allegedly was caught on a surveillance video suffocating her child, Carson.
HOUSTON — Adrian Peterson chose No. 29 for his high school jersey because he idolized Eric Dickerson growing up in Palestine, Texas. Peterson switched to No. 28 in college when 29 wasn’t available. But he never stopped emulating Dickerson, and always hoped he could one day break his NFL single-season rushing record. With two regular-season games left, Peterson, who is just under a year removed from reconstructive knee surgery, needs 294 yards surpass the 2,105 yards Dickerson gained in 1984.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Minnesota Twins signed right-hander Rich Harden to a minor-league contract Friday with an invitation to compete for a spot on the staff in spring training. The 31-year-old Harden sat out the 2012 season after surgery on Jan. 31 to repair the rotator cuff in his throwing shoulder, his latest setback in a long line of arm problems. Harden has the third-best strikeouts-per-nine-innings ratio in the majors since his debut with Oakland in 2003, behind only Tim Lincecum and Clayton Kershaw.

The moment of silence is being observed at 9:30 a.m. central time on Friday. At about the same time last Friday, a gunman killed 20 children and six adults at the elementary school in Connecticut. Dayton is also asking Minnesota churches and government buildings with bells to ring them 26 times at that moment to commemorate the dead.
A South Dakota cheese making company has agreed to pay $85,000 to settle a sex discrimination charge. The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission says Milbank-based Valley Queen Cheese Factory has agreed to pay the settlement to two female applicants rejected for the position of milk hauler. The EEOC says the company refused to hire the women for the milk hauler positions and had a history of staffing the position exclusively with men.
MERIDA, Mexico (AP) -- In the darkness before dawn Friday, spiritualists prepared white clothes, drums, conch shells and incense ahead of the sunrise they believe will herald the birth of a new and better age as a vast, 5,125-year cycle in the Mayan calendar comes to an end. No one was quite sure at what time the Mayas' 13th Baktun would officially end on this Dec. 21. Some think it already ended at midnight Thursday. Others looked to Friday's dawn here in the Maya heartland. Some had later times in mind.
