WASHINGTON (AP) -- Where is the NRA? The nation's largest gun-rights organization - typically outspoken about its positions even after shooting deaths - has gone all but silent since last week's rampage at a Newtown, Conn., elementary school that left 26 people dead, including 20 children.
BEIRUT (AP) -- NBC's chief foreign correspondent Richard Engel says he believes the gunmen who kidnapped him and his crew in Syria were a Shiite militia group loyal to the Syrian government. NBC said Tuesday that Engel and members of his production crew were freed unharmed a day earlier following a firefight at a checkpoint in Syria. The team was taken prisoner Thursday.
NEWTOWN, Conn. (AP) -- With security stepped up and families still on edge in Newtown, schools are opening for the first time since last week's massacre, bringing a return of familiar routines - at least, for some - to a grief-stricken town as it buries 20 of its children. Two 6-year-old boys were laid to rest Monday in the first of a long, almost unbearable procession of funerals. A total of 26 people were killed at Sandy Hook Elementary in one of the worst mass shootings in U.S history.
By Jon Krawczynski, AP Sports Writer EDEN PRAIRIE — The record many thought would never be broken is right there in front of him, and Adrian Peterson can smell it. His powerful legs have been chewing up the yards at a staggering pace over these last two months, chasing down Eric Dickerson’s single-season rushing mark with the relentlessness that helped him come back from a devastating knee injury in less than nine months.

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — The Orlando Magic had to figure out how to defend down low before they could make their move. Using a second-half rally, Glen Davis and the Magic won their third straight with a 102-93 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves. “It boiled down to who was going to be the aggressor, that team was going to win,” Magic coach Jacque Vaughn said. “That was my message at halftime. It was good to see our bigs respond to that kind of physicality.”
NEWTOWN, Conn. — Opening a long procession of grief, Newtown began burying its dead Monday, laying to rest two 6-year-old boys — one who was crazy about the New York Giants and one whose twin sister survived the rampage. Two funeral homes filled with mourners for Noah Pozner and Jack Pinto, the first of the 20 children killed in last week’s school massacre to receive funerals. The gunman also killed six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary, and his mother in her home, before committing suicide.
By Ben Walker, AP Baseball Writer NEW YORK — Eager for a new challenge and certainly a better chance to win, R.A. Dickey broke the news of his trade even before the Toronto Blue Jays and New York Mets. A few minutes ahead of the teams announcing the seven-player swap Monday that sent the NL Cy Young Award winner to Toronto, he tweeted his thanks to Mets fans and added he was all set to pitch for the Blue Jays.
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Recovering from war wounds that left him with one arm, Danny Inouye wanted a cigarette and needed a light. The nurse at the Army hospital in Michigan threw a pack of matches on his chest. He wanted to curse her. Instead, she taught him how to light it one-handed.
NEWTOWN, Conn. (AP) -- Gene Rosen had just finished feeding his cats and was heading from his home near Sandy Hook Elementary school to a diner Friday morning when he saw six small children sitting in a neat semicircle at the end of his driveway. A school bus driver was standing over them, telling them things would be all right. It was about 9:30 a.m., and the children, he discovered, had just run from the school to escape a gunman.
