ST. LOUIS PARK, Minn. — A car veered off a rain-slicked highway in suburban Minneapolis early Thursday, landing in a nearby holding pond and trapping five children underwater for several minutes. The children's conditions weren't immediately known, although St. Louis Park city spokeswoman Jamie Zwilling said they were unresponsive when they were pulled from the car. The driver of the car, a 23-year-old woman, made it out safely on her own. Lt.
WHITE SWAN, Wash. (AP) — A tiny Washington high school is home to perhaps the largest running back anywhere in the country — amateur or professional. At 400 pounds, Tony Picard racked up 576 yards rushing and seven touchdowns this year at White Swan High School. The Yakima Herald-Republic reports that his coach put Picard at running back because he was so athletic for his size. Many NFL running backs weigh half as much as Picard. Current NFL rushing leader LeSean McCoy of the Philadelphia Eagles weighs in at 208 pounds.
By Genaro C. Armas, AP Sports Writer This is it for Minnesota — a two-game stretch that could define a season that is already the most successful in a decade. After years of being relegated to also-ran status, the Gophers are playing meaningful Big Ten games in November. Beat Wisconsin this week and, if Northwestern can upset Michigan State, the Gophers can play an even bigger game against the Spartans on Thanksgiving weekend for a chance to go to the conference title game. Hold on, though.

Leake County Sheriff Greg Waggoner says Wolverton is accused of biting the unnamed player during a timeout during a Nov.
By Jim Litke, AP Sports Writer CHICAGO — As powerful as fans and even rival sports leagues believe it to be, even the NFL can’t do anything about the weather. Yet some 24 hours after the Chicago Bears closed out a dangerous afternoon at Soldier Field in light rain with a 23-20 overtime win against visiting Baltimore, more than a few people in the Windy City were still shaking their heads.
By Jenna Fryer, AP Sports Writer It took Jimmie Johnson just 13 races into his rookie season with Hendrick Motorsports to prove to his team he was a rare talent. He had just won at Dover for his second victory in four weeks and was debriefing with crew chief Chad Knaus when he brought up a sensation he felt in the car that day that he was certain came from wind blowing through a gap in the grandstands. It was remarkable insight, Knaus said, from a driver who understands very little about the setup of a race car. “He can feel the car.
BERLIN (AP) — A German federal prosecutor in charge of investigating Nazi crimes says he is recommending murder charges against a Minnesota man shown in a June AP report to be a former commander in a Nazi SS-led unit accused of burning villages filled with women and children.
CHICAGO — Intense thunderstorms and tornadoes swept across the Midwest on Sunday, causing extensive damage in several central Illinois communities while sending people to their basements for shelter and even prompting officials at Soldier Field in Chicago to evacuate the stands and delay the Bears game. The community of Washington in central Illinois appeared particularly hard-hit, with one resident saying his neighborhood was wiped out in a matter of seconds. “I stepped outside and I heard it coming.

ATLANTA — Next time you go for a checkup, don’t be surprised if your doctor gets on your case about your weight. The medical profession has issued new guidelines for fighting the nation’s obesity epidemic, and they urge physicians to be a lot more aggressive about helping patients drop those extra pounds. Doctors should calculate your body mass index, a weight-to-height ratio. And if you need to lose weight, they should come up with a plan and send you for counseling. “We recognize that telling patients to lose weight is not enough,” said Dr.
