WILLMAR - Motorists may encounter minor delays when crews begin work on the U.S. Highway 71 project from state Highway 7 to state Highway 23 south of Willmar on Monday. Crews will begin work on the bridges over the Willmar Bypass and then begin resurfacing Highway 71 approximately mid-August, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation. The project consists of a bituminous mill and overlay, turn-lane construction and bridge approach panel repair.
WILLMAR - The Western Minnesota/Red River Valley Area Labor Council AFL-CIO will host a community forum from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Monday at AFSCME Council 5, 1305 First St. S., in Willmar. Josh Wise, executive director of the Minnesota Fair Trade Coalition, will be keynote speaker. He will discuss the Trans-Pacific Partnership, an international trade pact being negotiated by the U.S. government and 10 other countries.
WILLMAR - The five Vision 2040 public forums designed to envision the future of the Willmar Lakes Area 27 years from now have been completed. The fifth forum was held Thursday night. Rebecca Ryan, founder of Next Generation Consulting of Madison, Wis., and forum facilitator, said comments taken from the public during the forums and comments taken from focus groups and other meetings will be used to formulate a report to be presented in November.
WILLMAR - Members of the Minnesota Ninety-Nines Women Pilots began work Friday afternoon and will finish today taping and painting a compass rose on the concrete apron at the Willmar Municipal Airport. The 70-foot-diameter design doesn't actually resemble a rose, but consists of rings with points emanating from the middle to show direction expressed in degrees. A compass rose points to magnetic north and is used by an airport's fixed-base operator to verify the accuracy of an aircraft's magnetic compass.

WILLMAR - A once-every-five-year overhaul project finds the steam turbine that produces some of Willmar's electricity at the 65-year-old city power plant is in good condition. "The good news is that the turbine is in very good condition, especially considering its age,'' says Jon Folkedahl, supervisor of power production for Willmar Municipal Utilities. "We have to inspect it and rework it every five years. But like I keep telling people, we have to continually rebuild something at the power plant because of its age.''
