Charlie Kohlmeyer's family made a gruesome discovery on Friday, the day after Thanksgiving. Informed by the Otter Tail County (Minn.) Sheriff's Department that one of their four horses had been seen acting strangely, Kohlmeyer's daughter, JoAnna, went to check on them. She found that Dan, a quarter horse who had been with the family for 14 years, had been blinded by a gunshot wound to the head. JoAnna Kohlmeyer, a North Dakota State University student who was home for the holiday, coaxed the horse back home, where a veterinarian examined the animal and determined there was no help for him.

The Dean and Janet Mace family lost a big part of its turkey farm to fire Monday night. Tuesday morning, as they waited for insurance representatives to arrive, family members consoled themselves with gifts of food provided by friends and neighbors. The fire destroyed one of the farm's two barns, killing 10,000 to 11,000 birds and erasing 50 percent of the Sandstone Turkey Farm's current flock. The farm a few miles southeast of Audubon, Minn., raises several flocks a year. "We'll bounce back," said Janet Mace. After the fire was discovered about 8 p.m.
Potentially heavy rains over the next several days pose a significant flood threat to the Red River Valley, the National Weather Service said Wednesday.
