FARGO - A jury has found Michael Nakvinda guilty of killing Philip Gattuso. Louis Keller, a self-taught tinkerer who helped invent the loader that made Bobcat a household name, died on Sunday at age 87. Keller and his 88-year-old brother, Cyril Keller, were the inventors who built the original, three-wheel, self-propelled loader designed to ease manure removal for an area turkey grower. The machine made by the brothers in the blacksmith shop they owned in Rothsay, Minn., more than 50 years ago was the foundation for the wide expansion of Bobcat, North Dakota's largest manufacturer. "He never dreamed it would go that way," said Marilyn Loegering, one of Keller's 10
WHEATON, Minn. - In an attempt to shave more than a dozen years off his prison term, the man who admittedly murdered a 14-month-old girl in a church here last fall insisted Wednesday that he didn't mean to kill anyone when he cracked her skull with a baseball bat. David Collins, taking the stand in his murder trial in Traverse County District Court, said that while he came to Thy Kingdom Come World Ministry to beat up the girl's stepfather, Claude Hankins, it wasn't his intent to kill him.
MOORHEAD - The father of the 12-year-old boy who survived a gas-fueled explosion Sunday in Moorhead knows that Dane Tvedt never made it to his son's side. "This was a thing of the spirit. Dane gave his life to save my son's." Devan Vanbrunt, Smith's son, is recovering at Regions Hospital in St.
BRIARWOOD, N.D. - In 2009, Dick Knutson arrived too late to save his house here. He won't make it this time around, either. The 65-year-old died Friday in San Diego as he waited for a train to take him to Fargo. But his house is in good shape, as a crew two dozen strong worked there Wednesday to build a 2-foot sandbag wall to protect it. "This is what people are about in the valley.
The driver in a bus crash that killed an area teenager in 2008 accepted a plea deal Monday that gives him no more than 30 days in jail. Loren Ernst, the 71-year-old bus driver from Moorhead, was facing serious charges - including two felonies - in a trial that had been set to start Monday. Instead, he pleaded guilty to a gross misdemeanor of criminal vehicular operation, the lightest of charges he faced.
